Welcome to Sunderland Harriers & AC Web Site. Sunderland Harriers was formed in 1897 (re-formed 1905) and over the past century have promoted athletics in the North East of England. During this time the club has achieved success at national level at road running and cross-country over a wide range of age groups.

Clubmark
Sunderland Harriers need to qualify for the Clubmark Accreditation Scheme. To assist the club to gain this award we will need more volunteers and assistance from members and parents of junior members. Your help would be appreciated.
Sunderland 5k
The Sunderland 5k race held on Wednesday 21st July also incorporated the North East 5k road championships. The race was won by Matthew Nicholson of Morpeth Harriers in 15'12. The club were well represented with Brian Rushworth finishing 5th and first Over 45 veteran in 15'36. The club also provided the winners of the Over 50, Over 55 and Over 60s categories with Rob Rush, Keith Elliott and Len Christopher respectively. The womens race was won by Hester Dix of Blaydon Harriers in 17'00. Michelle Holt was the first female Harrier in 8th with 18'42. Thanks are due to the North East officials, Start Fitness and Powerade and all the volunteers, marshalls, first aid staff. Great North 10k - Sunderland
Jack Martin finished 14th in 33'04. Steven Potts was 17th, Steven Duffy 20th and Nathan Reed 21st. Michelle Holt was 9th in the womens race in 38'51 with Helen Ford 15th. Dominic Hill finished 2nd in the Junior race. Read More
Aviva English Schools Track and Field Championships
Michael Wilson won the bronze medal in the Junior Boys 800m at Alexander Stadium, Birmingham on Saturday 10th July in a time of 2'02.07.
Wednesday 7th July
Brian Rushworth won the Sunderland Council Race in the Park 5k at Herrington Country Park, holding off the challenge of Gateshead's Ryan Stephenson. Hayley Reed finished third overall and second woman at the Sunshine 5k race held on the quayside at Newcastle and Stephen Duffy continued his hectic racing schedule by finishing 13th in the Tynedale 10k equalling his PB of 35'27. Keith Elliott won the V55 category,finishing 40th overall in 38'28.
News
Congratulations to Patrick Martin who finished 8th in the 5000m at the British Trials over the weekend in a time of 14'27.41. The weather which was ideal for sunbathing on the beach, made for hard work for the athletes on the track.
On Saturday 26th June, Dennis Field, George Harden, Robert Laidler and Stephen Smith all won gold medals at the North East Veterans Track and Field Championships..
Stephen Duffy finished third in the Beamish Tram race. Paul Redman and Sean Smith also participated.
News
Gavin Massingham was a convincing winner of the Stan Long mile held at Gateshead Stadium on Wednesday 15th June. Hollie Lancaster won a very close Under 13 Girls 100m race. Meanwhile, Brian Rushworth continued his remarkable record winning the Penshaw Hill race, which is sponsored by North East Vending. Hayley Reed won the ladies race.
On Sunday 13th June, Callum Todd won four events at the Minor Athletes league, with victories in the Under 11 Boys 75m, 600m, Long Jump and Howler throw where he set a new league record. Laura Hand won the Under 11 Girls 600m in a new league record with Charli Gill fourth. Both had earlier qualified for the final of the 60m with identical times in their heats.
The ladies finished third team at Blaydon on Wednesday 9th June, with Ingrid Hope winning her age category. Paul Redman was first Harrier to finish with Hayley Reed leading the ladies home.
New Club Record
Congratulations to Michael Wilson for breaking the Under 15 Boys 800m record at a British Milers Club race in Birmingham. Michael's time of 2'01.02 took over a second of the previous best time set by David Clark in 1990.
On track
Nathan Reed and Michael Wilson were convincing winners of their respective 800 metre races at the second North East Athletics league fixture at Monkton Stadium. Despite a power cut which threatened to end the meeting, neither let the disruption hamper their performance with bold front running from the gun. At the Veterans league meeting held the previous week, Stephen Smith won on his Sunderland Harriers debut in the Over 50 men's 100 metres. The younger age groups also had great success at the Durham Clubs for Young People track races and the young athletes meeting at Gateshead.
British Masters Road Relay Championships
Sunderland finished 6th team after Brian Rushworth with the joint fifth fastest time of the day brought the club up into second place at the end of the fourth leg. Ken Bell with 15'50 was the Harriers second quickest runner over the 3 mile circuit. Paul Redman easily improved his best time on the course with his 16'35 on leg 7. Paul, together with Brian Bewick who ran 16'05 on leg 5, both participated in the Pier to Pier race the following day.
North Eastern Counties Track and Field Championships
Hollie Lancaster and Michael Wilson both won two gold medals. Hollie won the Under 13 Girls 100m and 200m while Michael won the Under 15 Boys 800m and 1500m. Nathan Reed won the Under 20 men 5000m and Sophie Burnett won the Under 13 Girls 1500m. Alix Waites and Samantha McKenzie also won medals. Read More
Round Up
Congratulations to Ingrid Hope and Steven Duffy for setting new PBs for 10k at the Blyth Transped 10k race on Sunday 26th April. Both had run the previous week at the Sand dancer 10k Multi terrain race in South Shields.
Also well done to Paul Redman, for smashing his previous marathon time at the Virgin 2010 London Marathon. In the mini marathon there were good runs from Sophie Burnett, Luca Irvine and Michael Wilson.
