ERRA National Road Relays, Sutton Park, Sutton Coldfield, Saturday 9th April 2011

Sunderland Harriers got off to a superb start as Patrick Martin finished third on the first long stage of 5.39 mile in a time of 26'10. This time proved to be the sixth fastest on the day and moves Patrick up to 4th fastest Sunderland Harrier over the Sutton Park course. On the second stage over a shorter 2.995 mile loop, Jake Archer after setting off probably too quickly struggled over the last mile, but still ran the quickest time by a Sunderland Harrier of 16'35. 18 year old, Jake is an 800m track runner and was making his Senior debut at a National competition. Jake finished in 19th position. Jack Martin on the next long stage pulled back 4 places with a good 17'20. Damien Weston, struggled on the fourth stage after spending the last week ill, running 17'22 and losing 10 places. Gavin Massingham ran a solid 27'45 on the fifth satge gaining six places before veteran Norman Younger ran 16'56 on the sixth stage losing four places so the club were back in 23rd position at the half way stage.

On the seventh stage, Mark Hood, showed he is still not back to full fitness, as he ran 29'00. Mark has a best time on this course of 26'58. Mark still gained two places handing over to 18 year old Jason Waite in 21st place. Jason is another Harrier who has struggled with injury for over a year. Jason ran 17'48 losing three places. On the next long stage, Noel Hitchcock ran 31'58 losing three places. George Harden, lacking race fitness ran a steady 17'24 losing a further place. George has ran almost a minute quicker on this course. Paul Redman, who has been the busiest competitor in recent months for Sunderland had a good run on the last long stage with 31'10 handing over in 30th place. Alan Hodgson a week afer improving his 10k pb to 37'33 at Blyth ran a steady 17'51 on the final stage to finish the team on 30th place. With two teenagers in the team making their National Senior debut and several athletes out injured, and others in the team still struggling with injuries and lack of fitness it was a good performance by the team. The later stage runners were also hampered by the popularity of Sutton Park, which in glorious weather attracts a lot of visitors, not all of whom make way for runners! The popularity of the park also delayed the exit by almost an hour, with a late arrival in Wetherby for the customary fish and chips!

The race itself, proved to be exciting with a dramatic finish. With the first two leading teams having their last stage runners going off together and third place only 28 seconds behind. Unfortunately for Morpeth, after Ian Hudspith had put in a storming eleventh stage to close a minute gap on Tipton and bring Morpeth home in the lead by less than a foot, Matthew Nicholson was unable to hold the lead. As the first two runners approached Keepers Pond with just over half a mile to go it was the Tipton athlete who picked up the pace to make the winning bid. At this stage, Newham were still 50 metres back in third place. Most of the spectators at Keepers Pond raced over to the finish line to see how the race developed. As the runners came into sight on the final hill, it was Tipton who now had a clear gap. Newham overtook Morpeth in the last hundred metres for the silver medal, with Morpeth having to settle for a very worthy third place.

However, Paul Besford in his first relay race for Sunderland took Sunderland into the lead on the fourth leg with 12'07. Jonathan Dobson extended the lead with 12'09 before Paul Redman ran 12'33 on the final leg. The Over 50 team finished 25th overall but 2nd Over 50 team with Len Christopher (14'34), Billy Bittlestone (15'10), Brian Long (14'57), Jim Weightman (14'40). Steven Duffy ran 11'51 on the second leg before four veterans took over for the team. Paul Cooper ran 13'08 on the third leg, Paul Collins in his first race in a long time ran 12'37 on the fourth leg, George Harden ran 12'42 on the fifth leg before Team Captain, Michael Hill, ran 13'31 on the final leg. The team finishing 10th overall. Michelle Holt ran 13'08 in the Senior Womens race, which proved to be the eigthth fastest time on the day.

Middlesbrough Tees Pride 10k and Mile - Sunday 5th September 2010

Gavin Massingham became the first Sunderland Harrier to run a sub four minute when finishing sixth in the mile race in a time of 3'56.9. In ideal conditions with a slight tailwind, Gavin narrowly failed to catch Colin McCourt, who will be representing England in the Commonwealth Games next month.

This wasn't the only mistake in the results as William Bittlestone was recorded as the third team counter finishing in 78th (third M60) in 44'08.  This gave South Shields Harriers an unexpected third team prize and Billingham Marsh House Harriers were credited with second team.  It was then pointed out that Paul Cooper was missed off the results as the third team counter, making Sunderland Harriers the second team to finish.

Robin Hood 10k - Jarrow - Monday 16th August 2010

Brian Rushworth was a convincing winner after overtaking early leader Ian Harding of Morpeth halfway round the opening 2 mile lap.  Brian extended his lead to about 50 metres at the end of the second lap, and despite attempts by Ian to close the gap on the last lap, Brian still had enough to maintain his advantage to the line in a time of 33'17.

Michelle Holt was the first Harriers lady to finish in fourth place.  Hayley Reed was fifth and Ingrid Hope was seventh lady and first veteran.  The ladies won the team competition.

Damien Weston had a steady run, as did Kathryn Watts.  We will confirm positions and times when the official results are online.  George Harden, whilst he might be struggling with running and riding a bike, proved there is nothing wrong with his eating pies and peas, when having second helpings, whilst waiting for the results back at the race HQ of the Robin Hood pub in Jarrow.
